Edenton Town Council will look at a salary study of town employees, while Hertford Town Council will learn about a proposal to merge the city’s and Winfall’s water systems during their respective meetings this week.

Perquimans County Schools Board of Education will vote to approve at a proposed Grades 7-9 Football Program. Recently the Edenton-Chowan Schools Board of Education approved having such a program to deal with low participation in the John A. Holmes junior varsity team and to build a strong program.

All of the meetings are open to the public and most include a chance for the public to discuss topics of concern with elected officials. Check the agendas, which can be found through links in this article, for details.

Below is a brief look at the upcoming meetings and a few highlights.

Edenton Town Council

Edenton Town Council will meet in a special meeting and committee meetings starting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 24, in council chambers on South Broad Street.

The special meeting agenda includes several items, many of which are related to Assistant Town Manager Dewayne Whealton’s update on the Minimum Housing Ordinance.

The council will consider ordinances marking the next phase of the code enforcement process for the homes at 111 E. Carteret St., 204 E. Peterson St., 508 N. Granville St., 800 Dr. MLK Jr. Ave., and 1350 N. Broad St.

Town Council will also look at the classification and salary study that was recently conducted.

During the committee meeting, council will get its first look at an updated personnel policy based on the study’s recommendations. The study has been discussed at past meetings, most recently in regard to the disparity between the town’s police department salaries and neighboring communities. Council will vote on whether to add the policy to the agenda of the next regular meeting for approval.

During special meeting, council will vote to approve a lease for the NCDOT Center Garage Bay at the Northeastern Regional Airport. The town will lease the space to the state Department of Transportation for $224.54 per month, starting March 1, 2025 and ending Feb. 28, 2028.

Hertford Town Council

Hertford Town Council will meet in a work session at 6 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the Horace Reid Community Center, 305 W. Grubb St. A copy of the agenda can be found by clicking here.

Among the items on the agenda is approving an ordinance to create a Historic Preservation Commission for the town. Hertford recently created a Historic District.

Council will also listen to Shannon Moore Withers Ravenel who will present information on Hertford and Winfall merging their water systems.

A copy of her PowerPoint presentation can be found by clicking here, while the study itself can be found here. The study notes the pros and cons of taking on Winfall’s water system, such as the need for about $11 million in capital projects during the next 10 years, and the availability of grants to help fund the merger.

There will also be a budget presentation regarding the general fund and fire department.

Council will look to adopt a resolution allocating funds for an outdoor fitness court as part of the 2025 National Fitness Campaign. They will also vote to approve the surplus of a town vehicle and appointing Coretta Calloway Norman to the Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment.
