High school sports teams across the Albemarle region packed plenty of action into the week, but one of Friday’s biggest developments came off the field.

First Flight High School canceled the remainder of its varsity football season Friday, citing a limited roster, injuries and concerns about having enough players to safely continue varsity competition.

The Nighthawks were 0-4 when the decision was announced. Friday’s scheduled home game against John A. Holmes was forfeited, while First Flight’s junior varsity program will continue its season.

First Flight Principal Joseph Bell Tyson said the varsity roster had become too limited to adequately rotate players or replace starters because of injuries or fatigue.

“Simply put, we do not have enough varsity players or adequate depth across the roster to safely continue the season,” the school’s message to families said.

Elsewhere, Manteo picked up another football win, Northeastern posted a shutout and the Albemarle Athletic Conference continued to show its strength in volleyball.

First Flight forfeits to John A. Holmes

John A. Holmes received a forfeit victory Friday after First Flight canceled the remainder of its varsity football season.

First Flight officials announced the decision Friday morning after meeting with players, parents, coaches and staff Thursday. The school cited its limited roster and concerns about player safety.

The Nighthawks had started the season 0-4.

Northeastern 48, Vance County 0

Northeastern (4-1 overall) rolled to a 48-0 road victory over Vance County Friday.

The Eagles have won four straight since dropping their season opener.

Manteo 14, Catholic 3

Manteo (4-1 overall) continued its strong start Friday with a 14-3 home victory over Catholic.

The Redskins have won three straight since suffering their only loss of the season against Northside-Pinetown.

Pasquotank County 21, Camden County 0

Pasquotank County (2-2 overall) shut out Camden County 21-0 Friday in Elizabeth City.

Camden fell to 1-3 overall.

Northside-Pinetown 26, Gates County 14

Gates County (2-2 overall) fell 26-14 to undefeated Northside-Pinetown Friday.

The Red Barons entered the game following a 26-0 victory over Northampton Collegiate & Technical Academy.

Volleyball

Manteo 3, Gates County 0

Manteo (13-0 overall) remained undefeated Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of Gates County (11-3 overall).

The Redskins won 25-14, 25-13 and 25-20.

The victory capped an impressive week for Manteo, which also handed previously unbeaten Perquimans County its first loss Tuesday.

Manteo defeated Perquimans County Tuesday in four sets, 24-26, 25-20, 31-29 and 25-20.

Perquimans freshman Aubrey Ashley recorded 22 kills, 16 digs and three aces in the loss. Hayleigh Solesbee added 20 digs and four aces.

Perquimans entered the match undefeated.

Camden County 3, Perquimans 0

Camden County (15-1 overall, 2-0 conference) swept Perquimans County (14-2 overall) Thursday, winning 25-22, 25-21 and 25-11.

The victory completed a three-win week for Camden, which also swept Indian River Wednesday and Washington Monday.

John A. Holmes 3, Gates County 0

John A. Holmes (15-3 overall) swept Gates County Tuesday, winning 25-15, 25-10 and 25-9.

First Flight 3, Pasquotank County 0

First Flight (5-11 overall) swept Pasquotank County (7-6 overall) Thursday, winning 25-6, 25-9 and 25-12.

The Nighthawks also swept Northeastern Tuesday.

Northeastern 3, Hertford County 2

Northeastern (3-5 overall, 1-2 conference) outlasted Hertford County Thursday in five sets.

The Eagles won the opening two sets 25-19 and 25-19 before Hertford County answered with consecutive 25-20 victories. Northeastern took the deciding set 17-15.

Currituck County 3, Martin County 0

Currituck County (6-9 overall) swept Martin County Thursday, winning 25-20, 25-15 and 25-16.

The Knights also swept Hertford County Tuesday.

Boys soccer

Camden County 4, Northeastern 3

Camden County (6-3-1 overall) edged Northeastern (2-5-2 overall) 4-3 Thursday.

The teams entered halftime tied 1-1 before Camden scored three times in the second half.

Perquimans 4, Currituck County 4

Perquimans County (6-1-4 overall) and Currituck County (2-5-3 overall) played to a 4-4 draw Thursday.

Bear Grass Charter 2, Gates County 0

Bear Grass Charter defeated Gates County (2-8 overall) 2-0 Thursday.

The teams were scoreless at halftime before Bear Grass scored twice in the second half.

Manteo 7, Northeast Academy 1

Manteo (6-3 overall) rolled to a 7-1 victory over Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Tech Wednesday.

John A. Holmes 2, Northeastern 2

John A. Holmes (6-1-2 overall) and Northeastern played to a 2-2 draw Monday.

First Flight 3, Manteo 1

First Flight (3-6-2 overall) defeated Manteo 3-1 Monday, handing the Redskins their first home loss of the season.

Camden County 7, Pasquotank County 0

Camden County opened its week with a 7-0 shutout of Pasquotank County Monday.

Cross-country

Area runners compete at Camp Cale

Several Albemarle Athletic Conference teams joined Bear Grass Charter for a cross-country meet Wednesday at Camp Cale in Perquimans County.

The field included Camden County, John A. Holmes, Manteo, Perquimans County, Gates County and Bear Grass Charter.

Camden County’s Noah Davis won the boys race. Complete boys and girls individual and team results were not available Saturday morning.

State rankings

Several area programs entered the week among the leaders in the NCHSAA’s Class 2A RPI standings.

The region was particularly strong in volleyball. As of Sept. 14, Perquimans County held the No. 1 spot in the 2A RPI, followed by Camden County at No. 2 and Gates County at No. 3. Manteo was No. 6 and John A. Holmes No. 8.

This week’s results could shake up those standings. Manteo defeated both No. 1 Perquimans and No. 3 Gates County, while Camden also swept Perquimans.

In boys soccer, Holmes entered the week No. 3 in the 2A RPI, followed by Perquimans at No. 4, Manteo at No. 14 and Camden at No. 20.

Manteo entered the week No. 9 in the 2A football RPI, with Holmes at No. 10.

The RPI standings are used by the NCHSAA as part of the postseason qualification and seeding process.

Girls tennis

Complete girls tennis results from the region were not available Saturday morning.
