EDENTON — The Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton will host a free America 250th Colonial Day on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All Chowan County families are invited to celebrate together.
Activities include a Tea Station with historical figures, face painting, colonial arts and crafts, and a one-act play featuring real Edenton figures who lived in Chowan County during the Revolutionary era. The play is set in 1789.
Actors include local John A. Holmes High School students Donterrio Rogers, playing Edenton’s own Jonathan Overton, a local Revolutionary War veteran; Tanaa Hines, playing Overton’s son; Scarlett Pfannenstiel as Margaret Bennet; and Patrick Lee as the closing narrator. Also portraying local figures will be Chowan County Commissioner Larry McLaughlin, Mr. Edward Stiver, and Lisa Laws as Tea Party Resolves signer Lydia Boyd Bennet.
Laws also wrote and produced the play, titled “The Five Freedoms of Americans.” She says it’s a play for young people, regardless of age. The subject is the origins of the U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment, which secured specific freedoms for Americans that were not guaranteed in other nations at the time.
