The law enforcement log includes events from Edenton, Bertie, Washington, Perquimans and Tyrrell counties. To quote the Bangor Police, “Keep your hands to yourself, leave other people’s things alone, and be kind to one another.”

Bertie County

‘And at some point, we have to teach people a lesson’

Bertie County Sheriff’s Office reports that when suspects broke into a Capeheart Road home in Merry Hill, the homeowner was able to keep the suspects at gunpoint until deputies arrived to take them into custody — suspects drove from Virginia Beach to Bertie County to end up in jail.

Christopher Timothy II and Nicholas A. Ralphfontlnan, hopes that’s spelled right, both of Virginia Beach, were charged with felony breaking and entering along with larceny.

“To the owner, I say, I appreciate you teaching these young men a lesson because I’ll be honest with you,” Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said in a video posted to social media, “People are tired of breaking into their stuff, and people are tired of people stealing their stuff, and we’re tired of people scamming our people out of money. And at some point, we have to teach people a lesson. If you are breaking into poeple’s houses, stealing their stuff, then you are putting yourself in a bad position. This afternoon, things could’ve turned much worse. Thank God that the homeowner had given the suspects mercy and was able to hold them at gunpoint with “Sweet Betsy” — that’s what I’m going to call his firearm — until law enforcement officers arrived.”

Edenton

Shots fired near MLK Drive; no injuries reported, Edenton police say

Edenton police are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday morning near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Mosley Street, authorities said.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 9:30 a.m. Investigators determined the incident involved two parties known to each other. No injuries were reported, and the only damage identified was to the victim’s vehicle.

Police Chief David LaFon said the public is not at risk.

“This appears to be an isolated incident involving individuals who know each other, and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community,” LaFon said. “Our officers responded quickly, and we are continuing to gather information to ensure everyone involved is held accountable.”

LaFon issued a firm warning regarding gun violence in the city.

“We want to reassure the public that the safety of Edenton remains our top priority,” he said. “Gun violence in Edenton will not be tolerated.”

The investigation remains active, with officers continuing to gather information and follow leads.

The Edenton Police Department acknowledged assistance from the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office, including Sheriff Edward Basnight and his deputies, as well as Chowan County Communications and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Edenton Police Department at 252-482-4444.

Knife found buried outside Columbia Early College High School auditorium

A knife discovered buried in the dirt outside an auditorium prompted a swift response from school administrators and a School Resource Officer at Columbia Early College High School on Friday, according to Tyrrell County Schools Superintendent Brianna S. Williams.

In a letter addressed to Tyrrell County Schools families and the broader community, Williams said a group of students and a staff member found the knife buried in the dirt outside the auditorium on Friday, April 24.

School administration and the School Resource Officer secured the item after being notified, Williams said. The knife was confiscated without incident, and no injuries were reported.

“At no point were any threats made regarding the item to students or staff,” Williams wrote.

Investigators were unable to determine who buried the knife or when it was placed there, though its appearance suggested it had been there for some time.

Williams expressed gratitude to those who came forward.

“We appreciate the quick thinking of the individuals who reported this and the swift response of our administrative team,” she wrote.

The superintendent’s letter emphasized the district’s commitment to campus safety.

“Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools a safe environment for learning,” Williams wrote.
