BY SCOTT PERRY

I feel compelled to speak up about some of the accusations being made against Tim Jackson, candidate for Elizabeth City’s 4th Ward City Council seat.

I’ve known Tim since childhood and had the privilege of working side by side with him in the Probation Department for 15 years, seven of those years as his partner in Currituck County. Let me be clear: Tim Jackson is not a racist, nor is he the person being described in that post.

During his career as a probation officer, Tim consistently went above and beyond for people from all walks of life. He helped countless individuals overcome addiction, find stability, and secure employment. That is not the work of someone who writes people off—it’s the work of someone who believes in second chances and community building.

Tim is running for City Council as an Independent because he wants to represent everyone in the 4th Ward—not just a party, not just a political machine. He is deeply committed to the future of Elizabeth City and has a clear economic vision for how we can grow stronger as a community:

Regional Growth – Chesapeake’s growth will naturally expand south into our industrial parks, and Tim understands how to prepare for that opportunity.

Infrastructure – We don’t have to wait on Highway 87; we’ve had a rail spur to the Port of Norfolk since the 1880s. We can leverage that now.

Living Wages – Our community doesn’t need more minimum-wage jobs; we need living-wage opportunities that allow families to flourish and neighborhoods to be safe. Freedom starts with private property, but people cannot build or keep property—much less create true freedom—without a living wage to support themselves and their families.

Private Sector Partnership – The government cannot carry the entire economic burden. The private sector must step up to create opportunities.

Skilled Workforce – The idea that we lack skilled labor is more excuse than fact. Our community college is legislatively mandated to train workers when companies relocate to our area. Skilled people will come to the opportunity if we create it.

This is what real vision looks like—not political posturing, but concrete plans for growth, jobs, and a future for everyone in Elizabeth City.

Tim has the courage to run as an Independent and the integrity to stand up for all of us. Thank you, Tim, for putting yourself forward to serve—not to divide, but to build.
