COLUMBIA — When the 76th Tyrrell County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held Tuesday at Tyrrell Hall, the kids came away with memories, ribbons and a sense of accomplishment.
Emilou Spruill, Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, said 25 participants exhibited 29 animals — 6 hogs, 14 goats and nine sheep.
Though the final sales totals are still being tallied, see below for the sales figures from the sale of the animals that may be changing as folks “add-on” to the final totals.

Why does coverage of the livestock sale matter?
Answer – the 4-H kids spend A LOT of time raising their animals and getting them ready for the auction – an experience that teaches valuable lessons and lifelong skills.
Auction offers the community a chance to show its support.
And it is fun to watch the auction – to see the kids’ faces light up when the auctioneer is shouting out bids, especially when there is a bidding war.

Last thing about livestock sales — I’ve worked in deep rural areas for years, so coverage of the county fair was something the local newspaper reported on because livestock sale was considered the “Superbowl” for 4-H. And I had a lot of fun watching the auctioneer bid up prices, seeing the kids show their animals and the community come together for this big event.
