Snow, or as the teachers say it at John A. Holmes High School, the “S-word”, is in the forecast with Old Man Winter invading Wednesday.

The upcoming storm was mentioned at Monday’s Chowan County Commission meeting. County offices may close because 4-6 inches, maybe more, of snowfall is forecast.

Edenton-Chowan Schools announced that there will be a remote learning day Wednesday.

Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency for North Carolina as a winter storm is forecast to bring snow and ice tomorrow.

That said, here are a few highlights from the commission meeting with more to come.

Brandon Shoaf is leaving us – this Chowan County Planner is headed across the river to serve as the Assistant County Manager for Perquimans County.  Most likely, Shoaf will take over as County Manager when longtime Frank Heath retires later this year. Congratulations!

Shoaf’s last day with Chowan County is Feb. 27. His first day with Perquimans will be March 3.

Before Shoaf’s time serving Chowan County that started in June of 2018, he worked for the Town of Hertford for 11 years, the first four as town planner, the last seven as town manager. Prior to working for Hertford, Shoaf spent three years as a regional planner for the Albemarle Commission, which is based in Hertford.

Shoaf graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning. He holds certifications through the University of North Carolina School of Government Municipal and County Management, the UNC School of Government Certified Zoning Officials Course, the  N.C. Rural Economic Development Center REDI, and the Georgia Tech Economic Development Institute.

In other business, the commission approved rezoning 9.74 acres – 921 and 927 Chambers Ferry Road – from A1 to R-15. Instead of agriculture, there will be multiple lots that start at 15,000 square feet, roughly a third of an acre, for a possible subdivision. When making the decision, commissioners grappled with land-use policy making – whether to maintain the rural nature of that area or open it up to the development of smaller size affordable homes.  More on this story to come.

Also, the commission approved a few change orders regarding construction at John A. Holmes High School, plans to replace the security surveillance system at Chowan Middle School, and plans to design and install an $1.7 million HVAC system at White Oak/DF Walker schools.

The district’s Board of Education approved the items at a previous meeting.

More on that story and other items to come.
