The Chowan County Board of Commissioners will vote on a contract for repairs and improvements at Bennett’s Millpond and the rezoning of 9.74 acres on Chambers Ferry Road from Agriculture to Residential during Monday’s meeting.
The Board’s regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Chowan County Public Safety Center, 305 W. Freemason St., Edenton.
It will be preceded by a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in closed session to discuss economic development with their attorney, according to the agenda.
Regarding Bennett’s Mill Pond, the Edenton-Chowan Recreation Department received two bids for Phase 1 of the park improvements. The winning bid was from Sawyers Residential of Bath for $153,034.
The work includes:
- removing and disposing of the old boardwalk and pilings
- installing new 6 foot boardwalk with new pilings
- installing handrails for the length of the boardwalk if needed
- installing a 16 foot by 16 foot platform at the end of the boardwalk, in water
- installing handrails for the length of the platform if needed
- removing and disposing of the old platform by the boat ramp
- installing two concrete handicap parking spaces
- installing a 4 foot wide concrete walkway to boardwalk
A public hearing will be held to rezone 921 and 927 Chambers Ferry Road, approximately 9.74 acres.
According to the application prepared by Chris Hehl for property owner Maria Walker of Quinton, Virginia. Walker wants to change the land use from residential and farming to residential, so the property can be subdivided and “smaller homes can be built.”
The property is near the intersection of Macedonia and Chambers Ferry roads, and is surrounded by housing.
Also on the agenda, the board will:
- Vote on several items involving Edenton-Chowan Schools including several change orders for the construction at John A. Holmes High School, the use of lottery funds to replace a surveillance system at Chowan Middle School, and a request for $1,753,261 to design and install an HVAC system at White Oak/DF Walker.
- Listen to an annual report from Jacob Peele regarding the Soil and Water Conservation District.
- Vote to amend the lease of temporary courtroom space at a location on Virginia Road. The site is being used as the temporary courthouse while repairs are being done at the building on Broad Street.
- Review and consider a request to use remaining funds from the Hicks Field Project to replace the roof on the office when the roof on the grand stand is being replace. The request also seeks permission to use additional funds to replace the scoreboard stairs and decking.
- Consider an audit contract and engagement letter with Thompson, Price, Scott, Adams and Co. for 2024.
