COLUMBIA – A bullet struck an exterior wall of Columbia High School on Thursday evening after someone fired shots from a vehicle at a person nearby, the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office said.
The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, near the school on Main Street. Sheriff’s Office said several shots were fired, and a single round hit the school’s brick exterior. No one was injured.
Investigators believe the gunfire was aimed at a pedestrian who was walking in the area at the time. The person has not been identified. The sheriff’s office said no threat was directed at anyone at the school.
The sheriff’s office is investigating and following up on leads.
And I’ll add this — So as to clear the air on social media and kill the rumor mill, Wildcats’ football Coach Ron’Dayle Floyd posted to social media that “no one shot at me and my son last night. Please stop the lies.”
Since other folks have shared the news, I’m posting our story online in case social media’s algorithm steers folks elsewhere.
And yes, that is a file photo of the bridge rather than the school because I’m not going to go looking for a single bullet hole in a school wall after a long day at the end of the week.
Agreed!
