On October 15, 2026 at 7 a.m., Washington County Schools received information from a Crisis Line regarding a threat against the school. Washington County Schools contacted the Sheriff’s Office and relayed the information that was received.
As a precaution, the Schools were locked down and students and staff were safely evacuated. School Officials subsequently decided to close school today and Friday.
An explosive Detection K9 was brought in to search the school for explosives and secondary devices.
The Sheriff’s Office requested mutual aid from Plymouth Police Department, Chowan County Sheriff’s Office, Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office and Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, all of which showed up in a very timely manner and ready to assist. We also want to thank the Pitt County Sheriff’s, Greenville Police Department, Washington Police Department and Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office for remaining on standby to provide additional assistance if it had been needed.
The Sheriff’s Office want to extend special recognition to our School Resource Officers (Tate and Scolaro) for their professionalism, orderly response and commitment to protecting students and staff until additional officers arrived.
This matter remains under investigation by The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, NC State Bureau of Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Threats against our children and schools are taken very seriously and we will pursue those responsible and hold them accountable under the law.
