COLUMBIA — A Meet the Candidates Forum for Tyrrell County will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the high school, though one of the two sheriff candidates will not be there.

Joey Elliott, the Republican nominee for sheriff, said he will miss the event after having a minor stroke over the weekend. He announced the news in a personal statement.

“The good news is that I am recovering well, with only some weakness in my right hand and knee, and my physician expects me to make a full recovery soon,” Elliott posted to social media Monday evening. He said his doctors advised him, “as a precaution,” not to take part in the forum.

Elliott said he remains committed to the race. “My desire to serve this community has not changed, and I look forward to continuing to meet with voters in the weeks ahead,” he said. He also thanked supporters. “I sincerely appreciate the prayers and support that so many have already shown!”

His opponent, Major Shively, who is running as an unaffiliated candidate, will attend, according to forum organizer John Thorne.

The two candidates on the sheriff’s ballot are:

  • Joey Elliott (Republican)
  • Major Shively (Unaffiliated)
