COLUMBIA — Overcast skies couldn’t stop the Scuppernong River Festival held Saturday, October 10, in Columbia.

Hundreds of people lined Main Street to watch the parade during the morning. Among the highlights were the Columbia High School and Martin County High School bands and organizations represented, the sirens of fire trucks, and the aroma of food from various vendors.

The event included rides, bounce houses and art activities for kids provided by Pocosin Arts.

Fireworks were scheduled for later in the day.

Why cover the festival? Because it serves as a homecoming of sorts for folks who call Tyrrell County home. I saw school board members, county commissioners, Miss North Carolina, classic cars, Columbia Town Council members, teachers, school administrators, and so much more — all embracing the warm feeling that comes from living in a small-town world. Saw lots of people, familiar and friendly faces. And the festival gives the community a chance to embrace hometown spirit, welcome newcomers — a couple of folks from West Virginia made a stopover — and highlight the best of Columbia and Northeast North Carolina.
