HERTFORD — Perquimans County Emergency Management will host a commemoration ceremony on Friday, September 11, 2026, marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people and reshaped the nation.

The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. on the Perquimans County Courthouse lawn in Hertford. In case of rain, the event will move inside the courthouse.

County officials say the brief program will honor the victims of the 2001 attacks, remember first responders who died in the line of duty that day, and recognize the first responders and service members who continue protecting communities today.

Organizers are extending a special invitation to current and former first responders — including firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, 911 telecommunicators, emergency management staff, and military members — to attend. Attendees are encouraged, though not required, to wear their agency uniforms or other first-responder apparel.

The ceremony will also acknowledge the lasting impact of September 11 on those who responded that day and on those who have lived with its effects over the past quarter-century.

“We encourage everyone in our community to join us as we remember, honor, and never forget,” said Jonathan A. Nixon, director of Perquimans County Emergency Services, which oversees 911 Communications, EMS, Emergency Management, and the Fire Marshal’s office.

County officials are asking residents to help spread the word by sharing the invitation with local departments, agencies, families, and community members ahead of the anniversary.
