EDENTON — The Chowan County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call on Monday, August 10, in the 900 block of Macedonia Road in Edenton, resulting in drug-related charges against a local man, Tommie Wayne Basnight, who happens to be the Chowan County Sheriff’s brother.
Tongues are probably wagging, so let’s take a deep breath and get this out of the way first — the Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Basnight is the older brother of Sheriff Edward “Scooter” Basnight and lives on a property adjoining the sheriff’s own, according to a press release issued Monday by the Sheriff’s Office.
In light of that relationship, Sheriff Basnight has recused himself from any involvement in the investigation and has already contacted the District Attorney’s Office to ensure transparency as the case proceeds.
Back to the incident that led to an arrest — when deputies arrived at the scene, they made contact with Tommie Wayne Basnight, who told them his stepdaughter was at the residence in violation of directives issued by the Department of Social Services. Deputies opened an on-scene investigation into both the domestic dispute and the reported DSS violation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

During that investigation, deputies uncovered evidence that led to drug-related charges being filed against Tommie Basnight, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The agency noted that its investigation into the incident is ongoing and that further details will be released as they become available and appropriate.
