WINDSOR — Law enforcement is responding to an active incident at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail, according to a joint statement released Monday by the sheriffs of Bertie and Martin counties.
Sheriff Drew Robinson of Martin County and Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin of Bertie County said in the statement that a large law enforcement presence is on scene at the jail, and that the situation is contained to the interior of the facility.
“There is no threat to the general public, as the incident is contained to the inside of the jail,” the sheriffs said.
The statement described the matter as an active situation and said no further information would be released at this time.
Unconfirmed reports have circulated on social media describing a disturbance involving inmates and a possible hostage situation, but those details have not been confirmed by either sheriff’s office. Albemarle Observer has not independently verified those claims.
