On a beautiful morning on May 30, 2026, the waters of Edenton Bay once again became the setting for a cherished maritime tradition as the Edenton Yacht Club hosted its annual Blessing of the Fleet.
Under sunny skies and light winds, approximately a dozen vessels of every shape and size gathered for the procession, from small recreational craft to larger sailboats and powerboats. Family members, friends and spectators lined the waterfront as the fleet made its way from Pembroke Creek across the bay, continuing a tradition that honors both the joys and responsibilities of life on the water.
The Blessing of the Fleet has long been a fixture of the Edenton boating community, the Regulator boat of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office kicked off the procession bringing together sailors and boaters in a ceremony rooted in centuries-old maritime customs. In recent years, Father Jonathan Tobias has become a familiar presence at the event, offering prayers for protection, safe passage, and fair winds for all who navigate the Albemarle Sound and surrounding waters. As each vessel passed through the procession route, Tobias extended the blessing to captains, crews, passengers (some the four-legged kind), and the boats themselves, asking for God’s guidance and care throughout the coming boating season.
A notable addition to this year’s ceremony was the use of a radio designed to help participants hear the prayers and blessings while aboard their boats. In past years, wind and distance often made it difficult for those on the water to catch every word of the ceremony. The new setup allowed many captains and passengers to listen more clearly as Tobias delivered the blessings, creating a stronger connection between the clergy on shore and the fleet moving through the bay.
As the final boats completed the procession and turned back toward their slips and moorings, the atmosphere remained one of gratitude and fellowship.
