Our family went to the Chowan Middle School winter sports (wrestling, basketball, cheer) and spring sports (baseball, softball, track) athletic banquet on Wednesday — the Bulldogs celebrated a successful season. The season was highlighted by outstanding team accomplishments.
“This year’s student-athletes and coaches showed perseverance and school pride throughout every season,” said Principal Brittney Lopez. “From conference championships to outstanding displays of teamwork and sportsmanship, they represented our school with excellence both in competition and in the classroom, and we could not be more proud of their accomplishments.”

The boys’ basketball team achieved an extraordinary milestone, capturing both the regular-season conference championship and the tournament title after an impressive 15–1 conference record.
The wrestling team delivered a dominant performance at the conference tournament, earning first place overall for the first time since 2004, with five wrestlers placing first and two finishing second.
The baseball team also secured both the conference championship and tournament title, completing a remarkable undefeated 16–0 season after ending as first runner-up last season.
These championship teams were led by Coach Chuck Haskett and Coach White (baseball), Coach Dorian Holley and Coach Winborne (basketball), and Coach John Reinhold (wrestling), whose dedication, leadership, and commitment to student-athletes were instrumental in their success.
Other programs also demonstrated excellence throughout the season. The softball team, coached by Rachel Cortezano and Amber Hoffer; the girls basketball team under Coach Jack Downum and Coach Chris Gilliam; and the track program led by Coaches Deanna Daniels and Mitch Stanley, with support from Coach Layton and Coach Turner, all showed tremendous commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Together, these student-athletes and coaches represented Chowan Middle School with pride and excellence, both on and off the field of competition.
The team’s success adds to the strong tradition of athletics at Chowan Middle School and reflects the supportive community of students, staff, and families who cheer them on each season. Congratulations to the Chowan Middle School award recipients, the following students received recognition!
