EDENTON — Pettigrew Regional Library Director Nate King announced his plans to resign at the most recent Regional Library Board of Directors meeting in Edenton.
His last day will be July 31, and he will be taking up a new job at UNC Asheville.
“It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as the Director of Pettigrew Regional Libraries. With very mixed emotions I am resigning as director,” King wrote in his letter of resignation dated May 15. “Last November, it became clear to me that I needed to move closer to my aging parents and began a job search. I have received several offers, and I have accepted a position at UNCA. I will always hold my time with Pettigrew Regional Libraries very close to my heart. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as director. I am more than happy to assist in any way during this transitional time. My last official day will be July 31, 2026.”
Letter of resignation included below.
King was hired in the fall of 2022 as librarian to lead the Tyrrell County branch of the Pettigrew Library system, later becoming regional librarian. With the announcement of departure, a search for a new regional librarian will begin.
King grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina, near Asheville, in a small town of about the same size as Columbia. Prior to being hired as a librarian in Tyrrell County, King worked for 12 years at the Montreat College library in different capacities: information support technology assistant, electronic resources librarian and library director. King had taught English Composition to freshman college students, as well as poetry and British Literature. He has a BA in English, an MLS from North Carolina Central University, and an MA in English from East Carolina University.
In recent months, King made the front page headlines after Lynda Mastronardo resigned in recent months as Tyrrell County librarian.
