PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Town Council took its first formal steps Monday evening to fill the Ward 2 seat left vacant following the death of council member Danny Wobbleton on April 1.

Town Manager Joanne Floyd outlined the path forward at the outset of the meeting, laying out a clear timeline for the appointment process. For more, read next week’s Roanoke Beacon — maybe there’ll be some names to announce of folks who seek that council seat.

“What we’ll do for this vacancy for Ward Two is we’ll get it advertised for thirty days, get applications in, allow for review and then make an appointment at one of the regular council meetings or a special council meeting,” Floyd said. “We’ll go ahead and get it advertised in next week’s Roanoke Beacon — we’ll get it advertised twice for thirty days.”

Mayor Crystal Davis asked how residents interested in the seat could obtain an application. Floyd explained that access would be straightforward.

“They can either come into town hall or they can download it off of the town’s website, or they can email me or the Town Clerk, and we can email that information out to them,” Floyd said, adding an important clarification: “It’s only going to be for Ward Two, not the whole town, but just Ward Two.”

Council member John Shelton noted the familiarity of the approach.

“That’s the same process that was used to fill the vacant Ward Three seat,” he said.

That’s the second vacant seat the council has had to deal with this year — Shelton was appointed to the Ward 3 seat in February after Steven Brown resigned in January.
