COLUMBIA — A Mooresville man was killed and a woman injured Sunday afternoon when a motorcycle crossed the centerline and struck a bridge rail on the Alligator Bridge in Tyrrell County, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 4:21 p.m. on US 64 when the eastbound motorcycle crossed into the westbound lane and hit the bridge railing, ejecting both riders. Jeffery Lynn Baker, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. His passenger, Megan Michelle Baker, 40, of Kannapolis, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk for treatment of her injuries.
No other vehicles were involved.
Traffic was backed up for more than a bit.
Prayers for the families involved.
The Alligator Bridge carries US 64 over the Alligator River on the Dare-Tyrrell county line, a stretch of highway with no shoulders and open water on both sides.
Last note: since we cross that bridge often, that’s an older photo—not from the wreck.
