GATESVILLE — A single-vehicle tractor-trailer crash near Winton early Monday morning required an extended extrication and prompted a multi-agency response spanning two counties.
At approximately 4:46 a.m., the Gates–Perquimans 911 Communications Center and the Hertford County 911 Center received multiple calls reporting the collision on Highway 13.
Upon arrival, first responders located the tractor-trailer with one occupant requiring extrication. Responders successfully removed the patient from the vehicle, and the individual was transported by ground ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of injuries. No fatalities have been reported.
Due to the complexity of the extrication and subsequent scene cleanup, traffic on Highway 13 was reduced to one lane for an extended period.
Gates County Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal William Tuwiler praised the response.
“Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling in the area as responders continue to manage the scene,” Tuwiler said. “Gates County Emergency Management would like to thank all responding agencies for their coordinated efforts and professionalism during this incident.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Emergency responders from Hertford County EMS, Winton Fire Department, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, the Gates County Sheriff’s Office, Gates County Rescue & EMS (Station 10), Eure Volunteer Fire Department (Station 50), the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Gates County office, and Gates County Emergency Management responded to the scene.
