PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Town Council seeks to fill a vacant seat following the recent resignation of a newly elected member, with applications due later this month.

Council member Steven Brown announced his resignation during a January meeting, just weeks after being elected in November. Brown said he was stepping down for personal reasons.

“I’ll be announcing today, on January 12, I’ll be resigning from my position due to personal reasons,” Brown said at the council meeting last month. “I’d like to thank the council for this opportunity. I wish everyone to do well going forward.”

Brown did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his decision. After his remarks, Mayor Crystal Davis thanked him for his service, and the council voted unanimously to accept his resignation. Following the vote, Brown left, maybe dodging a bullet, since it was a contentious meeting.

The deadline to apply for the open council seat is Feb. 20. Town officials have encouraged interested residents to contact Town Hall for information about the application process. Inquiries may be made at 124 E. Water Street in Plymouth or by calling (252) 793-9101.

John Shelton, who narrowly lost his bid for a council seat in the most recent election, has signed the line to be considered for the vacant position. We’ll update the story as we learn who else applies.

Hopefully, as would be proper, the discussion of filling the vacancy will be held in an open session when the time comes.

Under Plymouth’s system, council members serve two-year terms and are elected by wards, with two members representing each of the town’s three wards.

The Town of Plymouth operates under a council-manager form of government. The Town Council consists of six members elected from three wards, along with a mayor elected at large, and serves as the town’s legislative and policy-making body.

The council is responsible for establishing goals, overseeing major projects, and guiding infrastructure improvements related to community growth, land use, finances, and long-term planning. The council also appoints the town manager, who oversees daily operations and implements council policies.

Town leaders say filling the vacancy will help ensure full representation as the council continues addressing local priorities and community needs.
