EDENTON – The Edenton-Chowan County community is being called upon to help preserve the rich history of John A. Holmes High School through photographs that will be featured in a permanent display at the new school campus.
The new campus, located at the 700 block of North Oakum Street, will host its first full day of classes on Jan. 26, 2026.
Board of Education Vice Chair Sheila Evans, who is aiding the effort, is asking residents to dig through their photo albums, yearbooks, and memory boxes to find historical images that capture the essence of JAH over the years.
“Edenton-Chowan Community…. we need your help to make this a spectacular slide show for our students, faculty, and guests,” Evans said. “It will be part of the permanent history display near the Broad Street entrance of our new school. Since this part of the display will be electronic, we can change the pictures from time to time. What pictures do you have to share?!”
The project is collecting historical photographs depicting various aspects of John A. Holmes High School life, including:
- People – students, teachers, staff, and administrators throughout the years
- Facilities – buildings, classrooms, and campus landmarks
- Academics – classroom scenes, projects, and educational activities
- The Green – the school’s outdoor spaces and grounds
- Special projects and events that shaped the school’s history
Organizers note that most athletic accomplishments will be included in a different project, though anyone with sports-related photos is encouraged to submit them for consideration.

The slideshow will be prominently featured in the academic wing of the new campus, located near the staircase in the foyer area close to the Broad Street entrance (the cutout in the wall pictured to the left will be the space for the TV dedicated to the slideshow). The electronic format will allow the display to be updated periodically, ensuring that the school’s history remains a living, evolving tribute.
