Work at the new John A. Holmes High School continues both outside and inside the facility, which is located within the historic Town Common block in downtown Edenton (bounded by Broad Street, Oakum Street, and Freemason Street). Replacing the existing 1950-era building at 800 North Oakum Street, the project was approved by the Edenton-Chowan School Board in March 2021, with funding from a state grant and a local match totaling approximately $82.4 million.

The historic Boy Scout Hut was moved early during the construction process and now has a front porch. After the rear bathrooms are installed, a parking area will be placed behind the facility.

The architectural design blends two community‑preferred themes. The Broad Street façade features traditional proportions, entry columns, brick detailing, and classical ornamentation rooted in Edenton’s civic history.

The student-facing rear entrance features a more contemporary, industrial-inspired aesthetic, with modern wings flanking the traditional centerpiece. These dual entrances serve both ceremonial community use and efficient access for daily school operations.

As of spring to early summer 2025, on-site aerial photography shows that the main academic building’s brickwork is nearly finished, and interior infrastructure — including wiring, plumbing, drywall, and a new performing arts theater — is underway. Parking for approximately 347 vehicles will be available near the student and community entrances as specified in the site plan.
Students are scheduled to begin occupancy in January 2026, with teachers and staff moving in during the winter break.
