HERTFORD — Emergency crews responded to a house fire Saturday evening on Edenton Street near the Grubb Street intersection.
The fire was reported around 6 p.m., according to the Albemarle Observer’s on-scene reporter, Miles Layton. Firefighters from the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department and Winfall Volunteer Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze from the ground. Water from their hoses could be seen coming out of the roof.
The Perquimans County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene, assisting with the emergency response. Traffic was rerouted away from the scene.
Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire, according to initial reports from the scene. The inside of the wooden structure looked to be a total loss due to the heavy smoke damage, our reporter noted.
The smell of smoke was detectable at least 150 yards from the burning structure as temperatures hovered in the 30s on Saturday evening.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries have been reported.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
