GATESVILLE — Gates County Board of Education will hold a special meeting to review applications for filling a vacancy on the Board.
The meeting to fill Ray Felton’s unexpired term will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Merchants Millpond Visitor Center.
The board is accepting applications from interested residents who live in the same district Felton represented. Applicants are required to submit a résumé and a short written statement describing what they could contribute to the board. All materials must be submitted by Dec. 15 to the school system’s central office, either by hand delivery or by mail.
Board members said not every applicant may be interviewed but stressed that availability on that date, December 18, is important. The board also plans to post the application information on the school system’s website and place a notice in the parent section of the district’s Facebook page to broaden outreach.
After the Board reviews the candidates to narrow its selection, BOE Chairman Leslie Byrum said interviews with these candidates will be done in open session at the January meeting.
Worth noting, being a member of the local school board is a good gig — you get to make a difference in the community.
Generally speaking, school boards hold significant power, overseeing district vision, finances, and policy, including hiring the superintendent, managing budgets, setting local curriculum rules (like tech/sex ed), approving teacher pay raises, maintaining facilities, and ensuring a sound education for all students, acting as the main authority for local school operations. They implement state laws locally, handle daily management, and have broad authority over school property and programs, operating as a corporate body for their district.
