HERTFORD — A devastating residential fire in Perquimans County claimed three lives early Saturday morning (Dec.13, 2025).

Emergency responders were dispatched to the 1900 block of Harvey Point Road in Hertford after the Perquimans-Gates 911 Communications Center received a call about a structure fire Saturday morning.

Bethel Fire Chief Darren Saunders served as Incident Commander as several local agencies converged on the scene. Fire crews successfully brought the blaze under control, but the outcome was tragic. The fire resulted in three fatalities and two survivors.

The coordinated emergency response included:
• Perquimans County Sheriff’s Office
• Bethel Fire Department
• Hertford Fire Department
• Winfall Fire Department
• Perquimans County EMS
• Perquimans Emergency Management

The North Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are assisting with the investigation into the cause of the fire. Perquimans County Sheriff’s Office units remain on scene as the investigation continues.

At the time of the press release issued by Perquimans County Emergency Services, authorities had not released information about the identities of the victims or survivors, the cause of the fire, or the extent of property damage.

Jonathan A. Nixon, director of Perquimans County Emergency Services, expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims,” the press release stated.
