PLYMOUTH — Well… as they say, it’s on… Town Hall gave the Plymouth Food Pantry notice to leave the premises. Yep.. bad news to be sure.
Albemarle Observer filed a public records request with Town Hall — received the letter posted below at the end of the story.
Long-story-short – Town Manager Joanne Floyd sent a letter to Food Pantry Director Sam Rogers that says what we all knew was coming – you folks are going to need to leave the property where you’ve been serving the community for decades – you have til 5 p.m. Dec. 1 “to cease operations and vacate the premises.”
If there is any good news from the letter – Dec. 1 is the Monday after Thanksgiving, so there’s that. Between 80 and at least 100 families rely on that food pantry each week. And the food pantry will serve even more people during Thanksgiving.
Flashback – Councilwoman and Mayor-elect Crystal Davis led the push to close the Plymouth Food Pantry during the Nov. 10 meeting – see our previous story. Davis said her findings through a public records request showed the pantry had been operating illegally for decades without a valid lease.
“That property is not under lease. It’s never been under lease and it’s been operated for non-operable, which is a town property, since 1991,” Davis said. “That is not compliance.”
When Davis cast her vote, one can imagine her laughing maniacally like Cruella de Vil — though to be fair, that’s not on the video of the council meeting.
Letter from Town Hall
Like many folks, the Albemarle Observer was hoping that there would be a Christmas miracle, cooler heads would prevail. We’re still praying that things will work out.

I saw her pulling the wings off a butterfly the other day. And my son witnessed her stealing candy from a baby. The world takes care of people like this in it’s own way. Now we’re stuck with her? I’m hiding my Dalmations too!!!
