EDENTON — The stands were packed Friday night as John A. Holmes High School celebrated Homecoming with a festive atmosphere, a 56-28 football victory over Bertie County High School, and the crowning of this year’s Homecoming King and Queen.
Senior Jayla Phelps was crowned Homecoming Queen, while Lonnie Wilson was named Homecoming King during halftime ceremonies that drew loud cheers from classmates, alumni, and families.

The senior court also included Nia Bembry, Jamarion Basnight, Chai Dillard, Steven Ferebee, and NyJae Winfield. Photos by Kim Ullom — good photos, thanks!

Other class representatives were:
- Freshmen: Jayden Lindsey and Ma’Kiyah Holley
- Sophomores: De’Marjay Stanley and Ka’Riah Wilson
- Juniors: Josiah Soto and Elizabeth Plata
The Aces’ dominant performance on the field matched the energy of the celebration. Behind a relentless running game and a string of second-half touchdowns, Holmes defeated Bertie County 56-28, improving their season record to 4-4.
Fans enjoyed a night filled with school spirit, performances from the Holmes marching band, and a parade of floats representing each class and club. Alumni from several decades returned for the occasion, joining students in celebrating the school’s tradition and pride.
Next up, the Aces will host conference rival Perquimans High School (4-4) this Friday in what promises to be a tightly matched showdown between two evenly ranked teams. With both programs fighting for a winning record and playoff positioning, Holmes will look to carry the momentum from its Homecoming win into another strong performance under the Friday night lights.
