Meteorologists are warning that northeastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks and coastal communities, should prepare for a significant coastal storm system that will bring hazardous conditions from Saturday through early Monday.

Current Situation

A strong coastal low-pressure system is expected to develop late Friday (Oct. 10) near the Florida/Georgia coast, then track northward over or just east of the Carolina coastline throughout the weekend. According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, the forecast remains consistent with high confidence for impacts along the coast.

Primary Hazards

Strong Winds: Winds will begin increasing Saturday (Oct. 11) late morning, peaking late Sunday into Monday. Currituck County can expect sustained winds of 30-38 mph with gusts up to 55 mph along the coast. Inland areas will experience slightly lower but still gusty winds. These conditions may result in power outages and downed trees.

Heavy Rainfall: A Flood Watch is in effect for the Outer Banks and Downeast Carteret County from 2 AM Saturday through 8 AM Sunday. Rainfall totals of 2-4 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible near the coast. The heaviest rain is expected Saturday night into early Sunday. Flash flooding is possible in coastal areas.

Coastal Flooding: Minor to locally moderate coastal flooding is already expected today, worsening to moderate to locally major flooding through the weekend. King tides will exacerbate flooding impacts. In Currituck County, the 4WD beach road in Corolla is expected to flood and become impassable during high tides.

Marine Conditions: Dangerous ocean rip currents and rough surf are expected, likely resulting in red flag beach warnings. Offshore seas could build to 12-16 feet by Sunday night. Hazardous marine conditions will persist through Monday.

Timing

  • Saturday: Winds increase late morning; heavy rain begins Saturday night
  • Sunday: Peak rainfall early morning; winds continue to strengthen into evening
  • Monday: Winds peak late Sunday into Monday; conditions gradually improve

Tide Schedule for Currituck County

  • Saturday: High tides at 11:20 AM and 11:46 PM
  • Sunday: High tide at 12:18 PM
  • Monday: High tides at 12:47 AM and 1:24 PM
