EDENTON — When the Gospel reading came, it seemed particularly apt for the day. “Consider the ravens,” Jesus had told his disciples in the book of Luke. “They neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!”
Dogs and cats of all sizes and colors — even a guinea pig — came with their owners to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edenton for the blessing of the animals on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025.
Psalm 104 spoke of springs flowing through valleys where beasts drink their fill, of birds nesting among branches, of lions seeking their food from God. It was a vision of creation as it should be — interdependent, harmonious, filled with divine provision.
Rev. Melody Perdue’s reflection was warm and personal, her love for the day evident in every word.
“Today we honor the patron saint of animals,” she explained, speaking of Saint Francis of Assisi. “The reason for that is he wrote a lot of songs about creation — his love of creation and all of the creatures. And it was just something that was very near and dear to his heart, and that was something that he shared as part of his ministry.”
She paused, glancing around at the assembled animals. “So this is why we do a blessing of the animals service on and around his feast day, because these animals do represent just the love and the joy that I think just comes as receiving them as gifts from God. God made all of the plants and the trees and all of the animals for us to enjoy.”
Her smile was genuine as she surveyed the peaceable scene before her. “And I’m just really thankful that y’all came here today. I’m so excited to pray a special blessing over all of these wonderful animals.”
While checking on the rectory cats — Olive and Chip — in their carriers, she noted, “And so far, the kitties are okay. These cats are pretty chill over here.”
About 20 animals were blessed during the ceremony, which included treats for the dogs and cats.
