Bertie County

North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision around 6 a.m. Tuesday involving a 2000 International tractor trailer and 2022 Chevrolet pick-up truck. 29-year-old Tyshaun Hayes of Merry Hill, NC was backing a 2000 International tractor trailer across Blackrock Road into a private driveway.

NC Highway Patrol said that Chevrolet pick-up truck was traveling South on Blackrock Road and collided with the trailer portion of the tractor trailer that was across the roadway. The Chevrolet truck traveled underneath the trailer where it came to rest. The driver James Edward Hughson, 52 years-old of Colerain NC, was pronounced deceased on scene. The collision remains under investigation.

Edenton

Edenton Police responded to a residence on the 700 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, on Sept. 18, 2025, for a report that someone damaged a Ring camera by spraying it with spray paint. Officers collected audio and visual recordings at the scene. They estimated the damage to the camera to be worth about $150. The suspect was seen walking from the scene.

In other news, David Smith, 41, a homeless resident of Edenton, was arrested on Sept. 22 on West Water Street. Edenton Police charged him with felony charges of possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. A secured bond of $10,000 was set. He was confined to the Chowan County Jail.

Pitt County, NC

On September 30, 2025, at 9:10 A.M.  the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision at the intersection of NC 30 and Bundy Road in Pitt County, NC involving a dump truck. The dump truck was traveling west on NC 30 when it crossed the centerline, traveled off the road to the left and collided into a tree. During the collision the dump truck caught fire and the driver died at the scene. The collision remains under investigation. The name of the dump truck driver will be released once Medical Examiner Office positively identify the driver and the next of kin has been notified.

Perquimans County

Megan Forbes, of 138 Tuscarora Trail, Hertford, was arrested on Sept. 24 and charged with cyberstalking. An unsecured bond of $200 was set.
