COLERAIN – A Colerain man wanted in Virginia on abduction and kidnapping charges was taken into custody late Thursday night after barricading himself inside a home for several hours, authorities said.

According to the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 6 p.m. on September 25 to the 200 block of North Main Street in Colerain for a reported domestic incident. While deputies were en route, the county’s communication center confirmed that one of the individuals involved, Donnie Ray Deloatch Jr., 40, of Colerain, was a wanted fugitive in Virginia.

Deputies arriving on scene learned that Deloatch had locked himself inside the residence and refused to come out. Given the seriousness of the charges and the potential danger, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) was called in to assist.

Sheriff’s officials said Deloatch was repeatedly given opportunities to surrender peacefully, but he declined. Around 11:30 p.m., after more than five hours of standoff, Nash County SRT members entered the residence. Deloatch was taken into custody without further incident.

Deloatch faces felony assault by strangulation in Bertie County, in addition to the fugitive charges from Virginia connected to abduction and kidnapping.

Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin expressed gratitude to all agencies and responders involved in safely bringing the situation to an end.

“I greatly appreciate the staff of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Keith Stone and the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Colerain Fire Department, Bertie County EMS, and the Bertie County Communication Center,” Ruffin said. “I am so grateful this operation was carried out without injuries or further resistance. I also appreciate the citizens of this community for being cooperative. Residents may now return to their homes.”

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no civilians or deputies were harmed during the incident.

Deloatch was transported to the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail and is being held pending extradition to Virginia.
