Clif William

According to the State Highway Patrol, Clifton “Clif” William Jr., 70, of Aurora, was traveling north on US 13 in a Ford F-150 at 10:14 a.m.

His truck crossed the grass median and traveled north into the southbound lane of US 13 and collided with a Chevrolet work truck driven by Timothy Hutchison, 67 of Winterville.

Both Hutchison and Williams died at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation.

Williams had been mayor for the past 16 years.

“Mayor Williams was a dedicated public servant whose commitment to Aurora and its residents was unwavering. His leadership, vision and tireless advocacy for our community have left an indelible mark on the Town he loved so dearly,” the town said in a statement. “We honor his many contributions and join the people of Aurora in mourning his loss.”

State Rep. Keith Kidwell said the community lost a truly good man. “May the Light of God shine on his family during these trying times.”

Mayor Pro-Tem Jeff Peed has been named interim mayor until a permanent replacement is named.
