EDENTON – The Chowan County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, August 18, at the Northern Chowan Community Center, with a full agenda that spans public safety, school improvements, and financial planning.
One of the first items up for discussion is an auto-aid agreement between the Center Hill Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department and the Hobbsville Volunteer Fire Department. Fire Chief L.W. Nixon is scheduled to brief commissioners on the agreement, which would allow the two departments to automatically assist one another during emergencies, improving response times and coverage in rural areas.
Commissioners will also consider a new lease agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which currently rents office space in the county’s Agriculture Building. USDA’s annual rent is set to rise from $19,080 to $36,040 to reflect added operational costs, if the proposal is approved.
School safety will also be on the agenda. The board will review a $40,000 change order for John A. Holmes High School that would cover the installation of protective film on windows in congregating areas. The measure is designed to enhance safety if the school is used as an emergency shelter during hurricanes or other severe storms.
County Finance Officer Cathy Smith will present several financial items for consideration, including four budget amendments for the 2026 fiscal year and adoption of ARPA-related policies. The proposed Internal Control Policy and Procurement Policy are required for the county to remain eligible to spend federal American Rescue Plan Act grant funds.
In addition, commissioners will share updates from the external boards and committees on which they serve, providing reports on regional and community initiatives.
County Manager Kevin Howard is also expected to deliver his manager’s report, offering updates on pending county projects and issues.
