The Currituck County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in the Historic Currituck Courthouse Board Room to consider a range of issues including a solid waste ordinance review, two mining expansion requests, and routine board appointments.

The meeting will open with an invocation from Pastor Ron Lawrence of Jarvisburg Church of Christ.

Mining expansion requests

Two public hearings will dominate the quasi-judicial portion of the meeting, both involving requests to increase excavation areas for existing mining operations in Poplar Branch Township.

The first case, PB25-14 Green Acres Land Development, seeks to amend a special use permit to expand its excavation area from 40% to 50% of its 58.39-acre site at 7177 Caratoke Highway in Jarvisburg, north of Meadow Lake Circle.

The second case, PB25-17 Foster Forbes, involves a request from property owner Foster Allan Forbes to increase excavation from 19.9% to 42.7% of a 41-acre tract at 8180 Caratoke Highway in Powells Point, across from Pinewood Acres Subdivision.

Commissioners will hear evidence and testimony from applicants, county staff, and potentially affected residents before deciding whether to approve or deny each request.

In the new business portion of the meeting, commissioners are scheduled to reappoint Liz Hodgis to the Jury Commission for the 2026–2027 biennium.

The consent agenda includes budget amendments, a project ordinance for various school projects, and a resolution to accept a Coastal Storm Damage Mitigation Grant from the State of North Carolina.

While not listed under the quasi-judicial section, the agenda also notes a review of the county’s solid waste ordinance that will focus on the beach and off-road areas.
