This morning (July 26, 2025) in Edenton, just before sunrise, I looked up and saw something remarkable streaking across the sky. At first, it appeared as a bright light with a wide, white contrail stretching far across the early morning sky. It moved steadily, silently — a glowing line drawn high above, cutting across the dark blue canvas of dawn.
What I witnessed was the flight of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The rocket lifted off at 5:01 a.m., carrying a batch of Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. Even from hundreds of miles away in northeastern North Carolina, the effects of the launch were clearly visible — an awe-inspiring display of light and motion that felt both distant and oddly personal.
Long after the rocket had vanished, the remnants of the contrail lingered above Edenton’s Cotton Mill district, forming a vivid white cloud that stood out starkly against the still-dark sky. It was a fleeting but powerful reminder of just how connected we are to the greater world — even out here, where the morning is usually quiet, and the sky belongs to the birds and the wind.
