BY MILES LAYTON

Since no other media outlet seems to care enough to report the latest candidate filings, published below is the latest list of folks who have filed for office in our coverage area of Northeast North Carolina.

Yes, we are aware of candidates and elected officials who intend to run for election or reelection, but until you sign the line and it becomes public record, your secret is safe with the Albemarle Observer.   We’ll update the list periodically as we receive new candidate listings from each county’s Board of Elections.

And I’ll say it again – local elections matter more than the crap going on in DC and Raleigh. Washington can’t balance a budget or seem to agree about whether the Epstein list exists and Raleigh ignores everything east of I-95.

Municipal election season officially began Monday, July 7, when candidates across Northeast North Carolina and from across the state started filing to run for local partisan and nonpartisan offices.

Published below is a list of the candidates who filed on the first day. An ongoing list will be updated as we approach the end of the filing period on July 18.

The candidate filing period opened at the start of business Monday and runs through noon on Friday, July 18, unless otherwise specified in a municipality’s charter or by local session law.

Filing takes place at each county’s board of elections, not through the State Board of Elections in Raleigh. Prospective candidates must file a notice of candidacy and pay the appropriate filing fee, which varies by municipality and office.

Per Bertie County BOE – Please note that the towns of Powellsville and Windsor vote according to the Nonpartisan Primary and Election Method. If the number of candidates for the contest is greater than twice the number of seats to be elected, there will be a Primary Election. The Primary will trim the number of candidates down to twice the number of seats. For example, if there are 7 candidates running for 2 seats, the top 4 vote-getters in the Primary would advance to the General Election. If needed, the Primary Election would occur on Tuesday, October 7th before the General Election on Tuesday, November 4th.
