American Legion Post 40 to Reopen Former ReStore

EDENTON – After nearly three decades of serving the Chowan and Perquimans County communities, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on North Broad Street closed in March. But a new chapter is already underway.

In a public announcement Tuesday, American Legion Post 40 Commander Ed Mathews confirmed that the organization is taking over the space and relaunching the beloved thrift store as the Chowan Veterans Thrift Store (CVETS). The grand reopening is scheduled for Friday, July 5 at 10 a.m.

“You may have heard many rumors about the possibility of the American Legion taking over the operation of what was formerly the Habitat for Humanity ReStore thrift store,” Mathews said. “Well, I am happy to say that these rumors are TRUE!”

The new CVETS store will carry on the tradition of community service by offering low-cost goods and raising funds for local veteran and civic initiatives. According to Mathews, the store will be staffed by many of the same dedicated volunteers from the original ReStore, along with new volunteers eager to support the cause.

“The new CVETS will continue to support our community just as had been done in the past,” Mathews said. “And if you would like to volunteer, we’d love to have you!”

End of an Era for Habitat ReStore

The former ReStore, which operated for over 27 years, officially shut its doors following a months-long evaluation by the Chowan–Perquimans Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors in the spring. The Board cited challenges in meeting Habitat for Humanity International’s (HFHI) evolving guidelines for volunteer operations.

“Unfortunately, operating the ReStore according to current Habitat for Humanity International guidelines with volunteers is no longer attainable,” the Board stated in a message posted to its website.

Despite the closure, Habitat leaders emphasized that their organization remains focused on building and repairing affordable housing. They also announced plans to collaborate with Edenton Emergency Aid, a local nonprofit, to possibly establish a new thrift-based partnership.

Looking Ahead

In the meantime, CVETS will take up the mantle as a retail resource and a force for good in the community. Mathews said a new Facebook page and website are being developed, along with signage and a phone number to help spread the word.

“So go ahead and spread the word — the thrift store is coming BACK!” Mathews said enthusiastically. “See you on the 5th of July!”

CVETS will be located in the same building at 1370 North Broad Street, offering a familiar space with a renewed mission: to serve the community and support veterans of Chowan County and beyond.

For those interested in volunteering with CVETS or donating items, updates will be posted soon via social media and local bulletins.
