HERTFORD — Several first-responders are on the scene of a structure of a long-time barbecue and seafood restaurant in Hertford.
Travelers have been advised to avoid US 17 — Ocean Highway South — in the area around Captain Bob’s Barbecue and Seafood.
According to Veronica Downing, who sent a video to the Albemarle Observer, a large cloud of smoke could be seen from several miles away from Edenton, which is about 14 miles southwest of Hertford.
Downing reported seeing the smokehouse, also known as the pit room, on fire at the time. Customers and staff stood outside of the building, near their vehicles, as they waited for first responders to arrive.
According to citizen reports, wind blew the fire to the main restaurant. Several catering trailers are usually parked between the two parts of the restaurant, but were moved before they could be damaged.
At about 7:30 p.m., crews from several agencies throughout the area were on the scene working the fire. Smoke was still billowing out of the building, but not as heavy as earlier in the evening.
After arriving on the scene, firefighters experienced low water pressure and called in a tanker truck.
Captain Bob’s, located at 310 Ocean Highway S, Hertford, is known for its barbecue and seafood and also caters many events in the area. It is owned by Sharon and Bobby Lane. The restaurant and its owners have been longtime supporters of various causes in the community. Captain Bob’s food has been served at Rotary Club meetings, grand openings, church gatherings, chamber of commerce fundraisers, high school sports fundraisers and more.
The restaurant is typically open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
