EDENTON – The Edenton Tea Party Chapter, NSDAR, held it’s annual May Awards Luncheon
on May 14 in the St. Paul Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall, and presented Community Service awards to the members of the Edenton “Tea Party Trolley” that held monthly specialty tours in the 10 months leading up to the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Edenton Resolves, later recognized as the Edenton Tea Party.
During those tours, members of the Tea Party Trolley dressed in period attire and assumed the persona of one of the 51 women or one of their supporters from this era in Edenton’s history.

Those recognized with Community Service Awards for their volunteer service are Bonnie Pierce (who received both individual and group recognition for her volunteerism), Sally Francis Kehayes, Barbara King, Clayton Hartsel, Chris Grimes, Lisa Laws, Rae Ohlert, Kathleen Towers, Sally Slaughter, Gay Chatham, Elizabeth Corker, Russell Corker, Gena-Erin Copeland, Nancy Sorensen, Anne Rowe, Alex Kehayes, Kay Currin, Amelia Bond and Tom Wood.

The Edenton Tea Party Chapter also presented an “Excellence in Historic Preservation” Award to the Cupola House Association. Vonna O’Neill accepted the award on behalf of the Association.

In addition, Chapter member Rae Ohlert was selected for the “Women in the Arts” award, a
national DAR award recognizing women in the arts. Ohlert was recognized for her many
works in historic costuming.
The Chapter received multiple awards at the State Conference held in Raleigh, North Carolina on May 3, and these awards were distributed to Chapter members. State awards included first-place awards for both the Independence Day and the Edenton Tea Party 250th Commemorative Events. The Chapter also received “Best Americanism Program” and the “Tricolor Chapter Achievement Award,” a top state award designation of achievement demonstrating excellence across several categories.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Today’s DAR is dynamic and diverse, with over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR members annually provide millions of hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world.
