A crowd consisting of supporters, the John A. Holmes High School Marching Band and residents of neighboring housing cheered on about 60 runners and walkers who participated in the Healthy Soles 5K on April 5 in Edenton.

The 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) course started near the intersection of East Gale Street and North Broad Street and winded its way through the historic district of Edenton and the Cotton Mill District. The race was hosted by the high school’s Herron Project Club.

The organization creates a “peer network to empower youth to make healthy choices. Club members encourage overall wellness, development of coping skills and leadership in their school and community. Through club meetings and events, students learn self-care, decision-making skills & stress management techniques so that they can cope with life’s challenges substance-free.”

Before the Herron Project Club took over the race, the event was hosted by the Edenton Chowan Kiwanis, a civic organization that dissolved in recent years.

The overall male winner was Robert Layton, a junior at John A. Holmes High School and member of the Herron Project Club, with a time of 19 minutes and 46.17 seconds. The overall female winner was Stephanie Beaman, of Edenton, who had a time of 25:54.97. More results can be found at Run the East, by clicking here.

Next year’s Healthy Soles race is scheduled for April 18, 2026. Registration opens Aug. 25. For race information and to register, visit Run the East.
