Highway Patrol is investigating the crash where a Chowan County farmer, a prominent one known by many, was killed Tuesday afternoon when his tractor collided with a tanker truck around 12:20 p.m. NC 32 near the Sound Bridge, according to the Highway Patrol.

Out of respect for the man’s family, we are withholding the man’s name until the Highway Patrol officially releases it because that’s the right thing to do. Let’s hope the other media outlets do the same thing.

According to the Highway Patrol, the farmer’s John Deere tractor—which had a Rhino blade attached to the back—was making a left turn into the farm when a tanker truck hauling liquid nitrogen hit the blade.

The tractor veered off the road into the ditch and rolled over – the driver was thrown from the vehicle; he died at the scene.

The tanker went off the road, too, then into the ditch and field – the driver wasn’t hurt, according to the Highway Patrol.

Traffic was rerouted away from the accident site for several hours.
