As much as six inches of snow was reported to have fallen on Chowan County Tuesday night.
Schools, businesses and government offices throughout the state closed due to the inclement weather.
On Wednesday afternoon, the snow began to melt but the water was expected to refreeze Wednesday night into Thursday morning as very cold temperatures/wind chills as low as 4 above was expected.
The National Weather Service issued the cold weather advisory to be in effect from midnight Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, a high pressure system brought temperatures 15 to 25 degrees below average from parts of the Mid-Atlantic to the Central Gulf Coast.
The bitter cold will persist into Thursday, with a slow return to normal temperatures expected by Friday.
“The cold temperatures and wind chills pose a heightened risk of hypothermia, as well as frostbite to exposed skin,” the federal agency warned. “Protect pets, livestock, and exposed plumbing to avoid over-exposure to the cold. Have a cold weather survival kit if traveling, and fill up fuel tanks/batteries so that you can stay warm if you become stranded.”
Closures and cancellations
- Edenton-Chowan Schools will have a Remote Learning Day for all students on Thursday, Jan. 23. Since it is the first day of the semester for John A. Holmes High School students, the district urges those students to log into Google Classroom and PowerSchool to get their assignments.
- Town of Edenton Offices will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday and will open at 10 a.m.
- Chowan County Offices will operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday. Offices will open at 10 a.m.
- Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools will have a Remote Learning Day on Thursday, Jan. 23.
- All College of the Albemarle campuses will be closed Thursday, Jan. 23.
- The Perquimans County offices will be closed Thursday due to expected road conditions.
- The Albemarle Commission and Northeastern Workforce Development Board, headquartered in Hertford, will be closed Thursday.
- The NCWorks Career Centers in Edenton and Elizabeth City will be closed Thursday.
