A round-up of Aces and Pirates’ sports scores from our neck of the woods…

Published below are the results from John A. Holmes and Perquimans high schools’ meets — swimming, indoor track and basketball, also Chowan Middle School wrestling. Coaches/fans — if you have sports scores and/or story suggestions, send them to albemarle.observer@gmail.com

Before the scores – a weather report – snow may be ahead on Tuesday for Northeastern NC – maybe a 70 percent chance, according to the National Weather Service. And it’s going to be cold this week so cook some homemade soup or chili and thank God that we don’t live in one of those states where these frigid temperatures are normal or even considered a heatwave during the winter. See this week’s forecast at the end of the story.

Next, per Joanna O’Neal, congratulations to the Pirates’ swim team on placing 1st overall in their conference meet vs. Tarboro and NECP on Saturday. The men’s team placed 1st, and the women’s team placed 2nd. — Pirates’ swimmers are continuing to cut time and swim personal records.

• 1st place: Hailey Bass, Jackson Connor, Catherine Howell (2x), Joshua House (2x), Jay Roberts (2x), Andrew Whitehurst

• 2nd place: Hailey Bass, Tyler Herron, Caroline Russell

• 3rd place: Jackson Connor, Alayna Damron, Caroline Russell, Andrew Whitehurst

• 1st place relays: women’s and men’s 200yd freestyle and men’s 400yd freestyle relay

Go Pirates!

On that note, remember when the Pirates’ swim team was just a pair of swimmers – Joleigh Connor and Ian Ford – and now look at the team – wow!

I remember how Joleigh was excellent in the backstroke – achieved conference titles, crushed school records and conquered postseason.  Well, her brother Jackson, a freshman, is pacing himself to victory in the fast lane these days.

JAHHS boys’ basketball defeated Currituck 61 to 56 on  Saturday at that high school close to the beach – has a cool lighthouse. Aces (7-4) are scheduled to play against Lakeland (4-6) at 9 a.m. Monday at the Border Clash at Elizabeth City State University.

JAHHS girls’ team was narrowly defeated 34-39 in a hard fought game against Currituck on Saturday. Lady Aces (4-7, 3-1) play against Manteo (2-8) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Aces’ country.

Perquimans boys’ basketball team fell 53-54 in a tight match against Martin County on Saturday at home. Pirates (2-13) too will be playing in Border Clash against Northampton Eastville (2-6), Virginia, with tipoff at noon on Monday.

Pirates’ girls’ basketball team defeated Martin County 63-43 at home on Saturday. Pirates (14-1) will play against Bertie (3-9) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bertie County High School.

Thursday, Chowan Middle School’s wrestling team had a tri-meet against Elizabeth City and Currituck Middle Schools on Thursday in Bulldogs’ country. Albemarle Observer saw a lot of talented Bulldogs wrestle their hearts out. CMS beat Currituck but fell in a back-and-forth battle to ECMS.

Meanwhile, here are the indoor track meet from Tuesday at Boo Williams Sports where JAHHS’ boys team finished 11th and PCHS’ finished 12th of 16 teams with the Lady Aces at 14th.
