On Monday, the Chowan County Commissioners will recognize some longtime county employees and outgoing Commissioner Alex Kehayes before picking a new chair and committee appointments.

A meet-and-greet gathering will be held at 5 p.m. at the Chowan County Public Safety Center, 305 W. Freemason St., Edenton.


During the meet and greet, the commissioners, along with Commissioner-Elect Tony Shaffer will be present. According to the meeting agenda, no business will be discussed at that time. The public is invited and there will be light refreshment.


The regular meeting will start at 6 p.m with an employee recognition ceremony, immediately followed by the recognition of the service of Kehayes, according to the agenda.


Employees being honored include:

  • 5-year anniversary (hired in 2019): Wendy Burge, EMS; Christopher Elsbree, Land Records; Lashauna McNeil, DSS; Tabitha Martin, EMS; Elisha Nixon, Water; M. “Davis” Todd, Maintenance; Nicholas Tynch, Water; Herman Weiss, Central Communications; and Jennifer Whitehurst, EMS.
  • 10-year anniversary (hired in 2014): Carol Copeland, Register of Deeds; Kevin Howard, County Manager; Holly Pierce, Sheriff; Justin Saez, Sheriff; and Sharon Valentine, Tax.
  • 15-year anniversary (hired in 2009): Colin Ryan, EMS.
  • 20-year anniversary (hired in 2004): Shelia Russell, Sheriff.
  • 25-year anniversary (hired in 1999): Brian Chappell, Recreation; Kenneth Pierce, Inspections; and Keri Thrasher, Central Communications.
  • Retirement recognition: Sharon Armstead, Recreation; Teresa Johnson, Tax; Terrence Meyers, Elections; and Donald Wheeler, Maintenance.


The oaths of office will be administered to re-elected commissioners Chris Evans, Ron Cummings and Tray Taylor and recently elected Commissioner Tony Shaffer.


The board will also elect a new chairman for the year 2025 and approve the meeting schedule.


In other matters, Howard will request the authority to extend the lease of the temporary courtroom space for one month, if additional time is needed after the completion of the courtroom renovation and the move of courtroom furniture during December.


Also during the meeting, the board will consider approving a resolution certifying the results of the Recreation Bond Referendum, which was held Nov. 5. The resolution declares that the referendum has failed and the bond order will not take effect.

Also happening this week …

The Opioid Settlement Funds Committee will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Chowan County Public Safety Center, 305 W. Freemason St., Edenton.
