Pirates’ volleyball player says ‘A big winning streak is such an amazing feeling’

Pirates’ senior volleyball player Laci Bateman is the featured Athlete of the Week.

Bateman, a setter for the team, has been playing for the Pirates for four years.

“Some of the best memories are during playoffs, the bus rides, the music, and the excitement,” she said.

Bateman said she was inspired by her older sister Autumn to play volleyball.

“Growing up I watched my sister play for the pirates and she was the biggest influence on me when it comes to volleyball,” she said. “I always wanted to be like her and play for the Pirates — she has been one of my biggest role models.”

Pirates (21-1, 12-0 in the Four Rivers Conference) have been on a strong winning streak – winning the last 18 games.

“A big winning streak is such an amazing feeling and a feeling that will truly never go away, it shows how hard we practice and how much practice pays off,” Bateman said.

Bateman shared her personal goal for the season.

“My personal goal is to become a better setter for my team as I was asked to set this year by my coach because we did not have another setter,” she said.

Active at Perquimans High School, Bateman is a member of BETA and HOSA clubs. She plans to attend Pitt Community College to study sonography.

“I do believe I have gotten a good education at Perquimans,” she said. “The teachers are always ready to help and when they put in effort to teach us and have us do hands-on activities is such an amazing experience.”

Daughter of Danielle and Martin Bateman of Hertford, Laci loves how the county supports the home team.

“One thing that I love about Perquimans County is the community,” she said. “They always come to support us even when they do not have a family member on the team. The community support we have does not go unnoticed.”
