Hope Academy — Edenton-Chowan Schools’ alternative school for students in sixth grade through 12th grade — now offers a chance for the community and students to come together through Fun Fridays.
Implemented by Director Matt Goetsch, Fun Fridays are a chance to involve the community in education through hands-on learning, career opportunities choices, and life skills. In order to participate, students must meet their individual goals for the week.Â

On Sept. 27, Kristi Nixon from Chowan County Board of Elections met with the students. She explained voting from the local to federal levels, showed local voting districts, brought sample ballots, demonstrated the process of registering to vote, had students set up equipment and talked to them about what the board of elections does.
On Oct. 4, Adam, David and Amberly from Colony Tire visited. They instructed students on changing a tire using the equipment that comes standard in vehicles. They also discussed the history of Colony Tire and various career opportunities.
Also, Hope Academy is signed up to be citizen scientists with CoCoRaHS, a national group that helps collects rain data.
Other upcoming activities include:
- Oct. 18 — Live ship to shore with the Nautilus explorer team. Mary Sawyer will teach pickleball basics.
- Oct. 25 — Farm field trip. Students will transplant plants they started in the classroom. They will release the chicken and ducks they incubated in the classroom.
- Nov. 22 — Merchants Millpond State Park field trip. They will learn about community stewardship, career options and go on a hike.
