Betsy Fest

Celebrates Betsy Dowd, a teenager who rode from Corolla to Hertford to warn the North Carolina militia of a pending British attack. The 250th anniversary of Dowdy’s ride is 2025.  At the Betsy Fest we will unveil the new Betsy mural that will be part of the NC Mural Trail of 100 murals in 100 counties. The event will include antique vendors, a colonial market, food, music, contests, and the DtH Betsy Dowdy contest.

The schedule include:

  • 7 a.m.-noon: Rotary Pancake Breakfast, Trinity Episcopal Church
  • 9 a.m.: Vendors and demonstrations begin throughout downtown Hertford.
  • 9-9:30 a.m.: Perquimans County High School band performs on stage
  • 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: 50/50 raffle, colonial silent auction
  • 10-10:30 a.m.: Mural ribbon cutting. Max Dowdle signs limited edition mural prints, only 50 available.
  • 10:30-10:45 a.m. and 2-2:15 p.m.: Stick-pony race
  • 10:45 a.m. at Main Stage then at 12:30 p.m. at Exhibit Tent: The reading of “The Ride” with author Kitty Griffin
  • 11 a.m.: Activities (courthouse law); barbecue plate sales, site X talk and Revolutionary relics demonstration, beer garden opens, kids Colonial corner
  • 11:30-noon: Announcement of the “Be A Betsy” contest winner and “best dressed” contect
  • 3-7p.m.: DJ Lady J on Main Stage
