crime scene do not cross signage

Residents across northeastern North Carolina are being warned about a new scam involving fraudulent “Notice of Default” messages that appear to come from the state court system. Several local law enforcement agencies, including the Edenton Police Department, report that individuals have received official-looking documents claiming they owe fines for traffic violations and must either pay immediately or appear in court. Authorities emphasize that these notices are not legitimate and are designed to pressure recipients into acting quickly out of fear.

The scam documents often mimic real court paperwork, using formal language, official seals, and even specific case numbers to appear credible. In many cases, the notice instructs recipients to scan a QR code or follow a link to pay outstanding fines. Law enforcement officials warn that these QR codes may lead to phishing sites that attempt to steal personal or financial information. Victims who comply risk identity theft or financial loss.

The Edenton Police Department has issued a clear alert to residents: “THIS IS A SCAM! Do not scan the QR code, provide personal information, or send money.”

Officials stress that legitimate court notices will not demand immediate payment through QR codes or informal channels. Anyone unsure about the authenticity of a notice is encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency or the appropriate court office directly for verification.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to share this information with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to scams. As these schemes become increasingly sophisticated, awareness remains one of the most effective tools in preventing fraud.
